March Q&A With Debbi

Hello to all in Bangleonia!!! It is I, Debbi "Rock Mum" Peterson sending greetings and answering some of the fabulous questions you sent in to the Bangles Fan Mail page in between homework and diaper changing!!

Hope you all are having a splendid year so far. Can you believe it's MARCH already?????

OK... Here we go....

FROSINE86 asks:
I once heard Barry Gibb say that he got the rhythm for what would later become 'Jive Talkin' when he was driving over bumps on a bridge with low air in his tires. Do you have any similar stories regarding how you found rhythms to what would later become one of your own songs?
Hey there, FROSINE86,
That was a great story! Well, I can remember playing around with the 'Walk Like an Egyptian' beat on the fabulous "Lynn" drum we had at the time and coming up with the beat to 'Bell Jar.' I suppose everything you hear has a beat to it: clocks ticking, construction (you know, those guys with hammers that are frustrated drummers!!), leaky faucets, etc. They can actually all be rhythmically inspiring...
Thanks for writing.
Love,
Debbi

Krazymarc69 asks:
Hey Debbi... As if this probably hasn't been beat to death... Is there ever gonna be a release of your early music from Down Kiddie and the The Real World  EP to CD?... My cassette is about ready to snap, and my collection just isn't a "collection" without these brilliant pieces of music history!!
Hi Krazymarc69,
Funny you should ask that! We've just had 'Getting Out of Hand' and 'Call on Me' - our FIRST single - for sale here on the website. However,as far as I know, we may be out of stock. We're hoping to get some more soon... In the very near future, we will also have the EP available for sale on the website, so keep an eye out for that!!
Thanks for your question...
Love,
Debbi

checkinoutthesceneo asks:
Susanna has told us some stories about hanging out with the "glitterati" back in the 80's...  Do you have any favorite stories about meeting or hanging out with celebrities? (Other than you and your own beautiful bandmates, I mean!)
Hi there, checkinoutthesceneo,
Yeah, we used to hang out with some GROOVY people!! I'm not sure if Susanna's mentioned this one or not, but we had a great time hanging out with Duran Duran in the 80's. We were in San Remo, Italy doing a TV show and afterwards we decided to go have dinner with the Durans... I can still remember following them out to the cars and there were a load of screaming fans (mainly girls, of course!!). They were grabbing at their clothes and ours as well, by proximity. We were caught up in Duranmania, which was unreal.
We had a fabulous time with them at dinner and we could hear girls screaming outside the restaurant! Later on, we went to a groovy club and had the whole VIP treatment (ah, those were the days!).
That's just one example. I can also remember meeting Eric Clapton, Kate Bush, Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins at the BPI awards in England. That was a thrill! And of course we had fun hanging out with Randy Quaid and Little Richard while filming the 'Walking Down Your Street' video.
Thanks for writing.

JMRFlyer asks:
What's the most un-Bangly song you (the group) have done? I don't mean least popular, but a song you feel doesn't really represent what the style of music you've chosen?
Hello, JMRflyer,
I always thought that 'Walk Like an Egyptian' was a very "unbangly" song. It had a drum machine track on it, which was awkward for me. Ironically, it's a part of Bangle history, but it still doesn't feel like a true representation of the Bangles (in my opinion).
Thanks for writing in.

Debbi

Selina asks:
Before I ask my question, I wanted to remind you that you are the BEST female drummer in all the UNIVERSE!! Whew! much better now.  Okay, my question is, have you ever considered recording harder songs (hard rock) and playing a double bass?  Maybe a speed pedal?  I have always wanted to hear you with a double bass.  I listen to 'Mud' by
Primus and when I hear the double bass at the end, I think to myself, "Debbers would sound so awesome on a double bass."  Anyway, just wanted to know.  Be blessed Debbi and hope you are having fun with baby Keira!!  Thanks for your awesome talent and music.
Hey Selina,
Hello again! Yeah, I'd like to do a few harder rock songs. I'm not sure about the double bass drum thing, though. It's never been a part of my style, but that doesn't mean I won't ever try it!!
Thanks!

Debbi

Dennis H. asks:
First, congratulations on your new addition! Second, I want to thank you and the rest of the gurls for all the great music through the years. Your new cd is fantastic! There's just something about Bangles music... You gurls can send emotions sailing from one end of the spectrum to the other with your great songs.  Now that you've had Keira, are you itching to get out and do some shows?  I live in Minnesota, and I'm hoping that one day soon, I'll hear that a concert date has been set up here.
Hello, Dennis H,
Thank you for your kind letter! I'm glad you like the Doll Revolution CD!  I am, in fact, looking forward to getting out and playing some. I love being a mom, but I do miss playing! We are planning on doing some shows in the summer (and perhaps sooner!). Keep checking the website for where and when.
Thanks.

Debbi

Michael asks:
I'm from South Australia. I just wanted to tell you how much I love your drumming which is really energetic and powerful, and I also love your haunting and magical voice. I was wondering if you have any plans for a solo CD?
Yours sincerely, Michael

Hi Michael from South Australia,
Actually, right now I'm so busy with my two best productions, Brian and Keira, that I have no solo plans at the moment. I don't know if you know this, but in the 90's I did do a CD with my friend Siobhan Maher called Kindred Spirit.  Unfortunately it's a
VERY RARE collectors item now, but I really enjoyed that project. But hey, you never know what may happen!!
Thanks for writing in,

Larry B. asks:
Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. I have been a Bangles fan for awhile now and wondering who is your favorite singer?
Hi there Larry B,
Thanks for the congrats! OOOhh, let's see. I have LOTS of favorite singers! Dusty Springfield, Karen Carpenter, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, Sheryl Crow, K.D. Lang, Bonnie Raitt, the list goes on and on!
Thanks!

Debbi

Taylor K asks:
I love the Bangles, but I discovered you on an episode of Gilmore Girls where you were performing. I thought that you were great!! Did you get to meet the cast of Gilmore Girls? What were they like?
Hi Taylor K.,
Yes we did get to meet the "Gilmore Girls"!  Both Lauren Graham (Lorelai Gilmore) and Alexis Bledel (Rory Gilmore) were very nice, and very funny! Lauren in particular was really playful. I remember that Access Hollywood or one of those entertainment news shows was there, and they interviewed us on the set. Right in the middle of the interview Lauren ran up squealing "Omigod omigod! It's the Bangles! It's the Bangles!!..." She sat down with us, and then later in the interview Lauren goes "Umm... I have a question for you guys... Why did you kick me out of the band?" And Vicki said "Well, Lauren, you were kind of terrible" and she said "I know... but I'm cute!"
It was great being on the show, except for the fact that we had to get up so early in the morning! But we were excited to be there. One of the show's producers was a huge Bangles fan and had written the episode especially for us, so it was great that it all worked out and we were actually able to do it. That was a long day for us, but we had a blast.
Thanks for writing!

Debbi

Katerina asks:
Do you have any arts pursuits in additions to your music? I heard that Vicki
crochets things and I know Susanna was a dancer before the band, so do you have also a secret talent?
Hello, Katerina,
Actually my other passion besides children and music is oil painting. I've taken a couple of courses in it and have done some painting. I really enjoy doing it, though right now it's hard to find the time. Perhaps some day I'll "show off" some of my collection...
Thanks!
Love,
Debbi

Alrighty, I think that's about all for now.
Keep on sending me
questions and letters,
because I love to hear from you!!

Love and Peace,
Debbi
