THE BANGLES TO PERFORM DECEMBER 13 AT THE ROXY TO RAISE FUNDS FOR TANZANIA'S TUNAHAKI AIDS ORPHANS

The TunaHaki AIDS orphans were rescued from the streets of Tanzania and taught the art of acrobatics at the TunaHAKI Foundation in hopes of supporting themselves as performers. In February 2006 they were evicted from their shelter, and now are housed in a facility that lacks running water, a kitchen, enough beds, and many other basic needs.
The orphans recently travelled to Los Angeles to receive gymnastic training from Olympic Gold Medal gymnast Mitch Gaylord, and Cirque Du Soleil, and to raise awareness of the situation in Tanzania, as well as their own plight.
Trained at the UCLA AIDS Institute, the Crossroads TeenAIDS Ambassadors take peer-driven AIDS education to schools all over the Southland, spreading their mantra: "Knowledge is Power". When two 13-year old Crossroads Teen AIDS Ambassadors learned about the orphans, they decided to help make a difference by staging a benefit concert.
The Roxy Rocks benefit on December 13 will raise funds to build a permanent home that can welcome more orphans from the street, with a vocational center and a permanent theatre so the children can perform for tourists, generate their own income, and become self-sufficient.
Susanna Hoffs offered to help after seeing a performance by the acrobatic orphans at Crossroads School, and soon Matthew Sweet, The Bangles, The Southland, Wires on Fires, Sugitap, and Modern Memory, along with the teen's own band, Headthief, signed on. The evening is being sponsored by KXLU 88.9 and will be hosted by DJ Eddie Becton.
